Something magnificent has happened to the Royal Academy of Arts . . . why, it’s gone pink! Guest curator Michael Craig-Martin has turned things a bit topsy-turvy for the museum’s annual Summer Exhibition, on now until August 16. The electric hue has some academics raising their eyebrows, however the pop of colour is undoubtably bold with intention. There are artists I have shown here who have had very distinguished careers and many of them used to be in the public eye much more than they are now. I saw this as an opportunity to bring audience attention to these artists and you certainly don’t go into that room and think, this is full…

Meet Emily Isabella, Hudson Valley, New York based designer and illustrator. Charming and cheerful, Emily’s aesthetic is one I was immediately drawn to — so much so that I commissioned her to create the new look you see on Quaintrelle today. Emily is the artist behind several titles including this lovely cookbook and continues to collaborate with brands on packaging and textile designs. As a child, she wandered her family’s Wisconsin prairie, pressing Queen Anne’s Lace flowers against her cheeks, pretending they were powder brushes. Her work reflects this idealism and serves as a reminder to continue to tap into our imaginations to remember the child we still are. One just look at…

The beach is a special place for me — it’s where I feel most at home. When I happened upon Tanya Harrison‘s Surf set whilst browsing Etsy one day, that sense of happy nostalgia returned immediately. Part of the beauty of the ocean draws from the vastness, the mystery, and the power of its tide. Waves that could (and do) destroy, floors that have never been seen by human eye — it’s all kinds of fascinating. But Tanya’s photos, seen here, capture an all together different feeling — one that is calm and serene. Snapped in the wee hours of the morning along the San Diego coast, Tanya (an occasional surfer herself) clicks…

Well friends, it’s the end of an era. This month will see the close of my all-time-favourite publication, Matchbook Magazine. Oh mon dieu, can you hear me weep? Matchbook was truly the first magazine that, although it was online, I felt really ‘got’ me. The digital pages were dripped in edge-to-edge inspiration content covering everything from fashion, entertaining, beauty, home decor, book lists, and lessons from iconic women before us. Regular features like “10 Things You Didn’t Know About… (insert icons like Cecil Beaton, Amelia Earhart, and Mary Cassatt) and feature profiles on creatives like Suite’s Jennifer Diederich, Jonathan Adler, and Genifer Sohr of Pencil and Paper filled the mind with ideas. I…
